Blood Stasis and the Importance of Healthy Blood
The Gengmen lineage’s protocol for Classical Chinese medicine is straightforward: use lineage-based “blood-transforming” pills to perfect the quality of the blood, and powerful, electric-like qi emission to clear obstructed meridians. At first, it might seem surprising that this seemingly simple methodology could improve such a wide range of ailments, but what this shows is just how fundamental the smooth flow of qi and blood is to the overall wellbeing of the human body.
In the same way that a blocked and dried up river can have substantial and sometimes unexpected effects downstream on different layers of a mountain or forest ecosystem, stagnant blood and qi in a meridian system can lead to serious consequences for human health, especially if left unchecked.
Qi and blood form a yin-yang pair in the human body and are deeply interconnected.
The Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor’s Internal Classic) states:
气为血之帅,血为气之母
Qi is the commander of Blood; Blood is the mother of Qi.
Blood is the (yin) material manifestation and is the “mother of form” 血为形之母. Blood moistens the sinews and nourishes the skin and flesh. “Qi” often refers more to the formless (“energetic”) dimensions and functional aspects of the body-system.
血气者,人之神。
Blood and qi together are what gives rise to spirit (shen ) in humans.
And so blood and qi, their quality and their ability to flow smoothly is seen as absolutely fundamental to human health and wellbeing.
“Where there is blockage there is pain” 不通则痛, “Where there is flow there is no pain” 通则不痛.
